Peterhoff as a fountain city is well-known all over the world. The ensemble of Peterhoff palace and park that arose in the first quarter of 18 c., is a specific triumphal memorial in honor of Russian victories for the way to Baltic sea.

The founder and the creator of Peterhoff was Peter the Great. The year of 1714 is considered as the date of its foundation as a countryside residence. The following architectors participated in its creation: I. Braunshtein, B. Rastrelly, M. Zemtsov, J. Leblon, A. Shtakenshneider, A. Menelas, hydraulic engineers P. Saulem, the brothers Baratini; sculptors B. Rastrelly, N. Pino, the gardeners P. Erler, A. Borisov, etc. During two years of building the level of ground was lifted up on the territories of future Low Park and Upper Garden, and their laying-out base was founded. Since 1719 to 1723 N. Miketty, the architector, worked up the projects of fountains and cascades, pavilions, trellis summer-houses and fences. I. Braunshtein played very important role during that period. He was supervising not only different objects but he made the projects of Marly-palace and the pavilion Hermitage that had been planned by Peter I.

Peterhoff unique water-supply was built in 1720-1721 by the project of V. Tuvolkov, the Hydraulic engineer. The peculiarity of Peterhoff water-supply system is the absence of any water-towers or pumps: the water for Peterhoff fountains and cascades goes by its gravity feed from Ropshinskie Hills that are full with plenty of springs.

August 15, 1723 was a date of the ceremonial day when the fountains started including the Great Cascade. This memorable event is annually celebrated as a traditional celebration of the fountains.

In 1734 when it was celebrated 25th anniversary of the victory on Swedish army not far from the village Poltava it was decided to create the sculptural group "Samson tearing the lion's mouth". That important event happened at Saint Samson's day. The sculpture was casted in 1735 by Rastrelly's project. In 1736 the work was finished, as a result of water of the fountain flew 20 m height. In 1802 the previous sculpture was changed to the bronze one.

During the look of Low Park was constantly changing. Around Peter's complex there was a cycle of parks made in the landscape style: Angliyskiy (British park), Alexandriyskiy, Kolonistskiy and Lugovoy that are full of the palaces and the pavilions made in different styles.

During two centuries the great ensemble of Peterhoff, including 7 parks of 1000 Ha. as the general square, was finished. There were a lot of memorable events in Peterhoff that were celebrated with the colorful fireworks. By the reason of their beauty and magnificence they were known all over the world.

In the present time 10 museums and 3 parks are available to visit: Upper Garden, Low Park and Alexandria. In Upper Garden and in Low Park there are 3 cascades and 173 fountains that function regularly. Among them the most popular fountains are the tricking fountains and the fountains with special mechanism, that were common for the regular parks of Baroque era.
